The grant is requested for the period of the forthcoming composition GREEK PASSIONS based on the novel by N. Kazantzakis, which will last two years. Martinů describes the development of his operatic works (JULIETTA, THE SPALIER, PLAYS ABOUT MARY, THEATRE BEHIND THE BRANCH, THE VESELOHRA ON THE BRIDGE, THE MARRIAGE, WHAT PEOPLE LIVE FOR and MIRANDOLINA). Now it's time for the next step - to musical tragedy. He has already finished the libretto. He gives a synopsis of the opera and Thomas Mann and Albert Schweizer's comments on Kazantzakis' novel.
