Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů has just finished MADRIGALS (PART-SONG BOOK) - four madrigals for mixed choir on texts from Moravian folk songs. He sends a copy to Karel Vötterle and notes that he can make arrangements with the Prague publisher for the English and German translations. MADRIGALS is a rather simpler piece, but always requires a first-class choir. BM suggests that one of the madrigals be printed in a new book of songs. BM asks KV to send back the pieces they have not accepted (MOUNT OF THREE LIGHTS and INCANTATIONS).
BM has sent VARIATIONS ON SLOVAK PEOPLE'S SONG to the publishers and has sent Mrs Suzanne Hirzel the children's piece she asked him for [COMPOSITION FOR TWO VIOLONCELLA]. He asks them to confirm that they have received the 'master sheets' for the first act of MIRANDOLINA. BM says that STOWE PASTORALS could be renamed "Douce Flute Pastorals" or "Pastorals". Thanks for the positive handling of the STORM SONGS matter. BM will send them the scores for the CONCERT FOR FLUTE, VIOLIN AND ORCHESTRA and the CONCERT FOR VIOLIN, CLAVIER AND ORCHESTRA. He notes that the RAPSODY - CONCERTO FOR VIOLA AND ORCHESTRA and the Concert Sonata for Viloncello [SONATA DA CAMERA FOR VIOLONCELLO AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA] will still have to be gone through. He has completed NONET [No. 2] and Kammermusik for harp, piano [CHAMBER MUSIC No. 1].
BM has the score of the one-act opera ARIADNA, lasting about 45 minutes, for small orchestra, tenor, baritone and coloratura soprano, written last year. Should KV be interested in it? It could be performed in New York with [Thomas] Scherman and who knows, maybe with [Maria] Callas, singing an opera concerto.
