Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů immediately replies to Karel Šebánek's letter. He asks for detailed information about ARTIA, whether they have contacts with foreign countries. The [State Music Publishing House] keeps mentioning it in its letters and BM does not know what it is about. Dr. Ernst Roth wrote to him that they had just reached an agreement [with SHV] regarding representation. This would solve the problem with the material published by Boosey & Hawkes that KS is asking him to do. BM thinks they cannot do all that KS is asking for in one season. [He goes on to comment on the individual pieces that KS has presumably asked him for:] He sent the score of La Jolla to Václav Talich after Vítězslav Nezval. VN also told him about the change of attitude in CSR towards BM's compositions. Most of the [requested] works were published by B&H, some by Universal Edition, Vienna - these things will not be a problem to get. But a lot of the chamber stuff was published by AMP. In his experience, he assumes that AMP will ask for money up front. They might get the works through Schott Music. He is to write to them, they will send a catalogue. The following is a list of works they have published and a list of works that have not been published at all. For THREE CZECH DANCES BM makes a note that a copy is with Jan Novák in Brno. B&H can also send a catalogue (they have just published THREE MADRIGALS for violin and viola). BM might have the unpublished stuff mentioned above published in Prague, it will depend on the contract with B&H and whether it is possible to send royalties abroad. BM would be interested in performing the 4th and 5th SYMPHONY. It seems to him that "it was screwed up at the premiere with [Rafael] Kubelík at the Festival". He thanks KS for his efforts and for Locandiera [MIRANDOLINA]. He asks if they could have performed it in Prague.
