Content and physical description
ContentRobert Vannoy has been preparing to write to Miloš Šafránek for over a month to thank him for the information about the new recordings of Bohuslav Martinů's works.
He ordered several records, which arrived in June: Piano Concerto No. 1 and Piano Concerto No. 2 (released by Panton) and Concerto for Flute, Violin and Orchestra (released by Supraphon). He received only SYMPHONY No. 1 together with the INVENTIONS (no recording has been released in the USA that includes SYMPHONY No. 2 and SYMPHONY No. 6 simultaneously).
He really likes the CLASSICAL CONCERT No. 1. The fugue in the first movement is surprising. BM must have had Camille Saint-Saëns in mind, there are similarities in the construction and in the use of the tutti. CLASSICAL CONCERT No. 2 is very tight and difficult to perform. The orchestration is very captivating. RV had never heard Dagmar Balogh before, she is excellent, as is Jan Novotny.
The Concerto for Flute, Violin and Orchestra is a pleasure to listen to. Marcel Moyse was certainly pleased with it.
SYMPHONY No. 1 is a wonderful work. Sergei Koussevitzky must have been proud.
INVENCIES is also nice. The performance of conductor Václav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic is impressive and its amazing sound was reminiscent of the Boston Symphony Orechestra when it was at its peak.
RV can't wait to hear SYMPHONY No. 2 and SYMPHONY No. 3, and especially more from VN and the Czech Philharmonic.
RV hopes that MS is doing well and that he is finishing his memoirs. RV looks forward to reading them.
