Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů writes to Vilém Tauský about how his letter brought back many memories of Brno and Paris and how he remembered their plans. In the end, everything is different than they imagined. BM knows nothing about the BBC project or what VT would have to write to him to make BM happy. As for VT's lecture, BM does not want to set precedents and write reflections on art, artists and himself, but in order not to discourage VT, he sends him a short article that he can use as an introduction to perform all of BM's symphonies.
The text of this article: In the beginning, England was just yellow on the map for BM (France was red). Later he found out that Handel, Berlioz and Dvorak were there and liked them and their music. BM thought England was very far from his little village [Polička] on the border with Moravia. He had a youthful dream that if they liked Dvořák, they might like his music too. At that time there was no radio and the sheet music was only in his head. Over the years things began to change unexpectedly and BM's half of the dream came true, his music is performed in England. BM hopes that his music will be liked and the other half of his dream will come true. The music may evoke Dvorak in a new version.
There is also an addendum (originally in English): if VT would like to use the article, he may also recall MIRANDOLINA, EPOS ON GILGAMES and SYMPHONY No. 6 (SYMPHONIC FANTASIES), which is currently being performed in Boston and New York, as well as JULIET (SNAR).
NoteThe letter was originally written in Czech except for the text for the programme which Martinů wrote in English himself - in the book the whole letter is translated to English
