Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů thanks for the letters. He thought that Jan and Eliška Novák were walking around Venice and he was sorry that they had not been allowed to go to Italy. BM thanks for the report on the THREE LIGHTS HOORAH. They have a new radio so hopefully he will hear it sometime. Moravan certainly sings it well. As for the opera [apparently MIRANDOLINA], BM can't send the score, it's being directed by Boosey & Hawkes who have had it for two years and nothing has happened yet. But BM doesn't want to put his fingers in it because he has to do with the PASSIONS. JN is to tell [Jiri] Pinkas that he has to deal with B&H or Artia. B&H will want the PM not to be behind the curtain [i.e. they will want her in the West] but why they have not arranged it by now is a mystery. Let Elishka Novakova play the Clavier Sonata, BM doesn't know if [Rudolf] Serkin has performed it yet, but it doesn't matter, he's had it long enough and could have performed it already. It will be published in print in Paris. They shouldn't give Novak a copy out of hand. BM asks if some passages are not badly played and asks JN to send him any corrections so that BM can have them already put into print. Both BM and ChM are recovering from the flu they caught in Paris. They would surely get material for both GENEITBA and THE Cobbler [WHAT PEOPLE LIVE BY] in Brno, but let them not change their titles. For Gogol, the right title should be Courtship [ŽENITBA]. But for The Shoemaker, it should be WHAT PEOPLE LIVE BY, not THE TALE OF THE SHEVITZ.
