Content and physical description
ContentDilia thanks Bohuslav Martinů for his letter of 16 December 1955. He informs him of the negotiations on the contract between Dilia and Boosey & Hawkes. The two publishing houses agree on the division of territorial scope (B&H has the West, Dilia the "people's democratic" countries) and compositions (B&H has the rights to ŽENITBA, ČÍM LIDÉ ŽIJÍÍ and MIRANDOLINA, Dilia the rights to ŠPALÍČEK, JULIET, DIVADLU ZA BRÁNOU, HLASU LESA; B&H has the rights to VESELOHŘE NA MOST for the West and Dilia for Czechoslovakia). Each party will reproduce the materials for the entrusted works and forward them to the partner party.
Disagreements arise over the mutual provision of materials and payment of royalties. According to the writer, Dilia's proposals are more advantageous to BM and he asks for a comment.
The Czech Music Fund has given Dilia the score of ŠPALÍČEK. Dilia will reproduce it and write orchestral voices on the membranes. The copy of THE THEATRE BEHIND THE GATE has been completed, the piano excerpt is being copied and the orchestral voices will be written out. This will be followed by THE BRIDGE and THE VOICE OF THE FOREST. Dilia would like to reproduce JULIET first, but she has neither the score nor the National Theatre material (BM has both). The text is translated into German by Ludwig Kaufmann. Negotiations with B&H are not progressing: would BM like to remove this opera from the forthcoming contract?
Czech theatres are mainly interested in MIRANDOLINA. Dilia has written to B&H for material, so far without success.
Dilia asks BM to lend her JULIET to reproduce the material before forwarding it to Wiesbaden.
There have been two recent successful concerts of BM's music. Otakar Šourek gave an accompanying talk at the [Union of Czechoslovak] Composers' Club (7 December 1955), and Václav Holzknecht at the Music Theatre.
