Content and physical description
ContentFritz Oeser informs Charlotte Martinů that André Wurmser has agreed to the terms of the contract [for the publication of TWICE ALEXANDER]. He thanks ChM for arranging contact with the librettist, who is not a member of the Société des Auteurs [et Compositeurs Dramatiques], as learned from that organization's reply, which ChM encloses a copy of [attachment not preserved]. The writer attaches the same contract as for AW, which is based on the terms of the contract for the ARIADNE issue. With apologies, they send the text of the contract in German only, awaiting ChM's signature when he discusses the matter with Paul Sacher. The piano excerpt with the German text will soon be ready and they will immediately send a copy to Prague, where they have already announced the performance of the work.
As for the fee for the world premiere of the work, which ChM asked about, the writer does not foresee any increase on the part of the Mannheim theatre. German venues do so only exceptionally, when they have directly commissioned a work from a composer or when they have a very close relationship with the composer. The contract with the theatre is already in place. Nevertheless, when the writer visits Mannheim in person during October, he will try to arrange the best conditions for ChM, at least to reimburse her for her stay during the premiere and her travel to it.
The writer is pleased that Henri Honegger has finally returned the manuscript of SONATA DA CAMERA to ChM, regrets that ChM subsequently had the manuscript photographed in Paris at such a high cost and asks for contact details of the photographer in question. The publishing house will discuss this price with the photographer before cashing in the amount from future profits on loan material. If a copy has already been made, he asks that it be sent to him; they would like to include the work in the editorial plan for next year, as a supplement to the INCANTATIONS and the "two rhapsodies" [RHAPSODY for large orch., RHAPSODY-CONCERTO]. Production of the latter continues in Prague. For reasons of time and quality, they decided to produce the orchestral voices in Kassel. Until the printed scores, study scores and piano extracts (voice + piano) are ready, they can offer photocopies of the manuscripts to interested parties. May ChM kindly direct anyone interested in material to them.
The contract for the above-mentioned orchestral works, including SONATA DA CAMERA, will be received by ChM immediately after the Kasseler Musiktage Festival, i.e. after 6 October.
