Content and physical description
ContentThe legation has decided to support Bohuslav Martinů, whereupon he has found a better flat, where he is able to work on behalf of the propaganda, but of course with this his obligations have increased and BM must still hope for financial assistance from Pavel Deutsch. In New York success with the CONCERTO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA NO. 2 and in Philadelphia with RICERCARI. In New York altogether fabulous reviews for the trio [? – in his previous letter to PD dated March 30, 1940, BM mentions that they broadcast his trio for piano, violin and cello, meaning BERGERETTES for violin, cello and piano, or PIANO TRIO NO. 1?]. In the U.S., Šafránek is paving the way for him, a booklet about BM is published. BM has started studying English and thinks it will go quickly. BM is preparing for the premiere of the DOUBLE CONCERTO on May 29 with Sacher. The CELLO SONATA NO. 1 with Fournier will be broadcast on the morning of May 19. The CONCERTO GROSSO along with material arrived via Sacher into BM’s hands. It will be another success, like the DOUBLE CONCERTO. BM wants Charles Munch to perform it. For this reason BM wrote a letter to UE, in which he requests that UE approach Sacher, asking him to give the score to PD, who has the opportunity to present the work with Ansermet – so as to not let it be known that that BM already has the score in his hands. BM is in the process of moving so he writes in haste. BM spoke with Brumlík and will return to the PD idea in his next letter. BM writes to PD that he is no longer so modest, and that he is claiming his place.
