Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů apologises to Paul [and Maje] Sacher for not having heard from him for so long - he was absorbed in his opera [Greek PASSION]. He has a cramp in his right hand from writing, and is almost unable to write.
The Roman stay did not go well for him and Charlotte Martinů; both were alternately ill and the weather was bad for two months. The people at the Academy are kind and let him take it easy. For the time being he has not many duties there and can devote himself undisturbed to his opera [GREEK PASSIONS].
A friend of Nikos Kazantsakis deals with contracts and he also helped the writer with the Universal Edition contract.
BM thanks for the news of the successful concert [SYMPHONY No. 6], he was a little worried. Charlotte Reber also wrote to him about it, the letter was signed by all the Rennweg cats [see Reb 1957-02-15].
They [S ChM] heard SYMPHONY No. 6 performed very well on [Czechoslovak Radio Prague]. They also listened to FRESKY PIER DELLA FRANCESCA from Baden-Baden and Lausanne. In Rome they played the QUARTET FOR OBOY, HOUSELLO, VIOLONCELLO AND Clavier performed by an ensemble from Detmold, Germany ["ensemble de Demond en Allemagne", adapted from Fish 1957-01-24].
BM reads books on ancient Greece and Rome.
Herbert Karajan, Rafael Kubelík from London and also La Scala have shown interest in the opera [Greek PASSION].
BM has not yet seen the piano extract of EPOS OF GILGAMES, but has been written to by Universal Edition that it is well under way, as is the preparation of the material. As soon as BM gets the sheet music from them he will proofread.
PS reportedly did a lot of traveling. BM is glad they could be in Basel for the performance of SYMPHONY No. 6.
BM wrote to Prague to send Sacher the choral score that BM had written in Nice [OPENING STUDIES]. The piece was premiered in Polička and a recording was made.
BM and ChM greeted Schoenberg.
