| Content | Bohuslav Martinů explains how he meant his questions and criticisms from his last letter. According to Karel Šebánek's statements and actions, BM thought that Melantrich had no interest in publishing CONCERT FOR CLAVIER AND ORCH. [No. 2], so he did not even send the score. He will send it, but he wants a contract. Regarding the performances [of the Piano Concerto No. 2], he explains that many were merely promotional events organized by the Legation, for which he received no money. For other performances Miloš Šafránek paid him a rental fee for the material. Rudolf Firkušný performs the concerto in a new version that BM created and for which he also purchased new material at his own expense. So KS is to deduct the fees from BM's money with Melantrich, although he could in turn charge the cost of the new material. KS shouldn't blame him for having all his important works commissioned abroad; he made enough money by keeping them with him for so long anyway. He clarifies the situation between KS and Melantrich and his relationship with them. He'd like to keep track of how much he's making with them, what they plan to publish, and he'd like to receive all contracts on time. He realizes that he may never see the money he should be getting, but he would like to compare terms with other publishers. He admits that if it weren't for KS, he probably never would have negotiated with Melantrich, and maybe they never would have negotiated with him. KS still hasn't written to him about how he wants to do it with representation abroad. Raplh Hawkes would have welcomed the cooperation, they were already discussing it, but when Melantrich let it fall through, they lost interest too. They certainly don't have to negotiate with AMP. If the compositions released in CSR can't be distributed abroad, they are completely lost to BM. KS should openly write to him about how things are with these things and if it will be possible to pay him money. He asks for his bust. It is in bronze and looks very good, he says. To reproduce it, a contract will have to be made with a sculptor [Hedvika Zaorálek?]. He asks how far he is with the copy of JULIETTE, he needs an extract with English text. Paul Sacher has also written to him saying that KS has promised him one, so he should not let this project fall through. Before fleeing Paris, he made a suite of Juliette. He'll try to find the score, there's interest. He asks how far along they are with SPALICE and what new work they are preparing. Antonín Čejka writes to him that he will try to send the money from OSA through the National Bank. He asked him to send some money to his siblings in Polička. He begged KS to see if this was okay. KS has not written to him if he has been to London and asks what is preventing him from entering into a representation agreement abroad. He does not know if he will come to the [Prague Spring] Festival, it all depends on [Princeton] University. |
