Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů thanks Herbert Reed for his letter. He is now in New York, there for the first performance of his SYMPHONY [No. 1] with [Sergei] Koussevitzky. Before that he performed it in Boston and Cambridge. HR wrote about his "Symphonic Danse" - BM thinks the title is good. BM knew that HR would be disappointed, but there was no more to be done at Tanglewood, the piece is only a preparation for Reed's other works, and BM is sure that his advice will be of use to HR in the future. BM would like to know Reed's opinion of the piece and its sound after performance [he probably means Reed's composition]. BM will be happy for more news and advises HR to choose a string quartet, quintet, string orchestra form, a larger form where he will have more opportunities to work with ideas and solve more problems. BM's older compositions are only available for loan. HR can ask AMP for a CONCERTA GROSSO or PARTITY score, BM would recommend TRE RICERCARI at Boosey & Hawkes. Martin's SMITH QUARTET [No. 5?] is also available for loan, and BM can arrange for HR to then return only the part and keep the piano lift. BM asks that HR write to him asking where the Martinů pieces could be played. Greetings to his wife.
