Content and physical description
ContentJürgen Sieber tells Charlotte Martinů that he got up in the morning to the sound of birdsong, sang the Marseillaise and listened to SYMPHONY No. 2 with the signal at the end of the third movement "Aux armes, citoyens!" [part of the Marseillaise].
He thanks for the letter and replies. The SCHERZO was composed in January 1924 and is dated 10 February 1924. It consists of 145 bars, divided into three movements. It takes the form of a small sonata for piano. The author dedicated it to Vlasta Kubes[-Hálková], who was staying for a time in Paris and studying piano with Bohuslav Martinů. VK wants to sell the manuscript so that she can renovate her bathroom (according to her friend Libuše Pešková, who hosted the writer in Prague in the spring). JS would like to buy the manuscript in the autumn if he goes to Prague again. The piece is still unpublished but should be offered for publication (e.g. to Bärenreiter, Éditions Alphonse Leduc, etc.). JS is currently trying to include THE BRIDGE OF THE BRIDGE and ARIADNE in the Staatstheater Kassel for the 1975/1976 season. He hopes to be able to get James Lockhart from Wales as conductor.
JS will not be able to go to Basel in August and will go to Düsseldorf with friends and attend one session. It is also a pity that he cannot make it to Liestal and Lucerne for Rudolf Firkušný's Martinů recital.
He is happy to be able to come to Vieux-Moulin again in the autumn. He hopes that ChM had nice weather in Switzerland.
