Content and physical description
ContentFrantišek Bartoš enjoys the letter from Bohuslav Martinů, looks forward to his articles and congratulates him on his success. They are very happy about it and those who were "at the pile at Mánes" are very, very much looking forward to it. FB dispels BM's fears that he would be forgotten. There are reports in the papers about him and the performance of his songs. He is also often on the programme,as evidenced by the attached programme [not preserved]. A week ago FB was with the President [Edvard Beneš] and he confirmed that BM and Rudold Firkušný have done a lot for our cause. Firkušný wrote that he would try to release the Philharmonic for the festival [Prague Spring] and offered a 2nd CLAVIERNE CONCERT by BM, which they gratefully acknowledge. BM's proposal to invite Paul Sacher with a DOUBLE CONCERT is thus postponed. The festival is planned as an allied festival, with [Evgeny] Mravinsky from the USSR, [Adrian] Boult from England and [Charles] Munch from France coming and each playing their nation's stuff. Therefore, they will invite Sacher for a separate concert that could take place before the festival (March, early April). The [Czech] Philharmonic remembers BM very much, especially Karel Novák. BM is the only composer (apart from [Vítězslav] Novák) who is represented more than once in the subscription concerts: with the 2nd SYMPHONY (10 and 11 January) and the Field Mass (28 February and 1 March). They would need his Lidice [MEMORIAL TO THE LIDICIANS]. Rafael Kubelík is going to the USSR with THE STORM, which he will certainly give in concert here. Messages answered. Jaroslav Křička is retired because of the article in Aryan Struggle. Karel Šebánek has already written BM about twice, he is putting together a concert of his works in Polička (8 July) and FB is to give a talk about BM there, so the article would be useful. [Jan] Löwenbach wrote that he had it rewritten. It is important that BM should not think anything bad of Václav Talich. The Germans had terrible methods and FB vouches for Talich. Even the ND orchestra and the ČF are behind him. Talich has been through a terrible time and now needs to be publicly "cleansed". Would BM like to write to him? It will help both Talich and others. He shouldn't mention FB though. Attached is Talich's address.
