Content and physical description
ContentThe journey to Rome went well, only a thunderstorm caught them before landing. A car from the Academy was waiting for them at the airport. He describes their apartment in the Villa Aurelia, which is close to the Academy. They have a view of Rome and are not far from the Vatican. BM met Mr Schlee. He spoke with gentlemen from Zurich who are interested in opera. They are offering 5,000 Swiss francs, which is not a large sum. BM will have to talk to them in person. He hopes he has good news about Willy. He announces that the Symphony No. 5 will be performed on the radio on 11 October on the Paris Inter Sinfonietta La Jolla station, and on the BBC on 13 November on the National Paris Cello Concerto. BM doesn't have much to do at the Academy. There are four student composers. They know one of them from New York. He's inviting the parish priest to Rome. On 18 October the Suite from Merrymaking on the Bridge will be performed on the BBC and on 19 October the Sonata No. 1 for cello and piano will be performed on the Suisse Romande radio station. BM has just completed the cantata The Legend of the Potato Floss Smoke. He explains that in his country people burn potato cake in the fields, which is why he likes to make a fire outside. It reminds him of his country.
