Content and physical description
ContentTranscript of a telephone conversation between Oliver Daniel and Rudolf Firkušný, mainly about Leopold Stokowski. Bohuslav Martinů is mentioned by RF in several places:
- RF played with LS Martinů's CLASSICAL CONCERT No. 4. Unfortunately BM was not at the premiere, he must have been in Europe at the time. He hadn't heard the concerto but was sure it was a good performance.
- OD had heard the opera PLAYS OF MARY by Martinů in Prague.
- RF played Martinů's CONCERT No. 4 with Stokowski. He also played CONCERT No. 2 with [Bernard] Herrmann for CBS. RF premiered it in Prague in the 1930s, and then when BM was in New York he decided to change the orchestration a bit. This version is the definitive version and it was published and was first performed by Firkušny with Herrmann, and BM was present at the concert and was happy to hear the piece in this new version. BM took a lot of things out of the score, made it more clear and lighter. RF then played CONCERT No. 4 with Stokowski. This concerto was commissioned by the Fromm Foundation, and BM gave Firkušny exclusive performance rights for several years.
