| Content | They thank [Marie Martinů] for the letter and immediately reply that they do not have any copy or contract and have not had one, so they do not know what it is about. Perhaps Bohuslav Martinů has it - in which case he should send it? BM wrote that he is well and working well, he plans to stay there [in Nice] until the autumn and perhaps longer. He's working on a full-length opera on an Italian text by [Carlo] Goldoni called LA LOCANDIERA, he's already finished the first negotiations. JULIETTA will hopefully be performed in Wiesbaden. Yesterday they found out that V. Neumann in Karlovy Vary on the 4th SYMPHONY. In Hamburg they performed the GENEITBA and in Berlin the SYMPHONY [which one?]. [Jan] Novák wrote from Brno that he was not allowed to play THREE DANCES FOR TWO CLAVERS. František Martinů may come to Prague in May, so they can talk about everything. Thanks for the offer from the previous letter, but they still have to live on, this month they ran out of the last instalment from the State Bank (10 000K). BM address: 94 Chemin de Brancolar, Nice, A.M. France.
BM's belongings that KS mentions have been kept in a safe in the savings bank and the others that no longer fit will be placed in a fireproof box at KS's disposal. He also wrote to [Miloš] Šafránek that the Czech Dictionary of Music had ordered an entry on BM from him, and needed the data on which MM would write BM. KS is right that BM doesn't even know how to do it, he sent them postcards from Carnivals, they were amazed that such "carefree merriment" still exists. They also went to Menton where they celebrated Carnival on boats at sea. They wished him well. They would have welcomed a visit to KS, but the region is "infested", the hospitals are closed and they are taking "it" one by one at their home - Henryk Martinů is just finishing his treatment. How is your mother? They won't do anything without an order from the CS. |
