Content and physical description
ContentIn the letter Bohuslav Martinů describes his enchantment with the city of Rome, which is why his letter is late. He describes the beautiful accommodation in a large studio with a terrace and the walks where he encounters history at every turn. Charli [meaning Charlotte] is also very happy. BM mentions a visit to Paris where much has changed, "almost as in our youth". The score of FANTASIES [thought SYMPHONY #6 SYMPHONY FANTASIES] is not yet edited, BM does not know what is happening with it at B&H [thought Boosey & Hawkes] but it has been promised to him for November and he will send it to MM as soon as he receives it. Fantasia will soon appear on the Victor record with Charles and Boston. [The first recording of the Symphonic Fantasies on an RCA Victor Gold Seal gramophone record occurred in April 1956 by Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra]. BM mentions working on a new opera, being so inspired in Rome that he reworked almost all the acts again [BM was in Rome working on the opera GREEK PASSIONS]. BM says goodbye to friends from Basel, mentions the Sachers and Conrad [Beck] and his wife [Mary Janet Beck]. He also wrote a cantata to a Czech text, it is for Prague [LEGEND OF THE SMOKE OF THE BAMBORA NATI]. BM thinks a lot of MM, and their stay in Paris, it was really lovely. Now BM has to deal with passport problems. When MM has a moment, let her write what is happening in Paris. Has MM had any news from Monique? [Monique Haas was Marcel Mihalovici's wife] She must be in Moscow now. Have MM write and expect the score.
