Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů thanks Jan Novák for his letter. JN may have already received BM's letter asking for old Slavic music. But JN finds nothing and has to forget about the matter, BM "sniffs" something out in New York [presumably for the preparation of the GREEK PASSIONS]. BM and Charlotte [Martinu] wish both Novaks a Merry Christmas. BM asks that JN not send any expensive gifts. BM wrote to [Karel] Shebanek that he met JN and JN made a good impression - this may help. BM is pleased that JN [and Eliska Nováková] will go to Prague with THREE CZECH DANCES. They don't have to give them out of hand. As for Gilgamesh, JN has time for that. BM himself set only a small part of it [EPOS ON GILGAMES] to music. JN's idea of making Gilgamesh an oepru is excellent, BM himself has thought of it, but it must not be rushed. They have information about Czech translations in Polička. JN should not start until he has an idea of the scene. From Polička they wrote that they are playing Wedding Shirts, again one of the things JN "stole" from Bohuslav Martinů [it is a JN composition, not BM's]. BM got the programme from the 8.12. concert, but he doesn't know how it turned out. How was PETRKLÍČ? Before JN goes into the opera [Gilgamesh] he has sent BM the synopsis. BM knows the material now and could advise JN scenically. The music is JN's business. JN is not to copy Martin's bad declamation from the choruses. JN has been the Lord's darling for a long time, unlike BM. BM is worried about how they will spend the winter in Polička, they probably don't have much to heat.
