Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů asks Karel Novák for help in arranging exit visas from the USA to the [Prague Spring] festival in Prague and back via Paris. BM fears that he will not be able to leave the Czechoslovakia without a certificate, and air travel is only with the permission of the Foreign Ministry. BM also wrote to [František] Bartos about this. It would help if the Ministry wrote him an invitation directly, then the consulate would have to deal with it. BM has a contract in Berkshire for a festival where he has been teaching since 1 July and must therefore be back in time. BM thanks for SYMPHONY [no.2?], glad they liked it, also FB wrote a nice letter. SYMPHONY No.2 is rather popular, the others are better, they will play SYMPHONY No.1 now and the others hopefully soon. Although the orchestras in the USA are first class, he was of course thinking of the Czech Philharmonic with [Vaclav] Talich when writing. They should keep [Paul] Sacher on record, it is he who saved them in 1939, the CN will be able to read about that in Martinů's article ["1938-1945"]. Sacher plays Martinů's double-act stunningly. When they play it, they'll find out more about BM than from books and reviews. BM sent packets. They are no longer to thank BM, but to write a letter of thanks to Mr. [Jan] Svec at his address in New York. And send three cartons to [Jan Svec's] family in Merino.
