Content and physical description
ContentThe sender wrote to Bohuslav Martinů in Paris last September and sent him a royalty of 184.10 marks and a detailed statement. Perhaps BM received the money and his messages.
As there were now postal strikes in France, the writer will not dwell on what BM received. He assumes that BM has returned again from the United States.
All of his compositions except "Trio" [CLASSICAL TRIO No. 1] have been reprinted and are available for delivery, as evidenced by the enclosed statement. Several performances have taken place. BM has not been forgotten.
The performance fees for most of BM's orchestral works have not yet been paid, with the exception of the SERENAD [FOR CHAMBER ORCHESTRA], the CONCERT FOR VIOLONCELLO [No. 1] and PARTITA, for which BM will still receive a share. He will soon receive 82.50 marks. The writer also sends the composer a pocket score of the CONCERTANT SYMPHONY ["Sinfonia concertante"], recently made to help promote this work. The piece has not yet had the success it deserves; the other works have been performed at least several times.
The CONCERT FOR VIOLONCELLO [No. 1] was postponed during the war and the only material was in the possession of Pierre Fournier. In the meantime, the Schott publishing house produced material to enable the work to be performed again; it is available. The writer does not think that technical difficulties have prevented the promotion of the work. At the same time he sends the composer a piano excerpt, asking if the changes can be made without too much difficulty. The performers of the concerto are generally technically up to scratch and will have no problems.
As for the CONCERTANT SUITE FOR VIOLINS AND ORCHESTRA [for Samuel Dushkin?; "de Dushkin"], the writer does not recall what conditions they set. The material is apparently in New York at AMP. The writer proposes to send the composer a lump sum of 1000 marks to pay off an old debt. He will contact SD so that the composition can finally be published. BM is to comment on the proposal. The writer is going to Buenos Aires at the end of the month and will be in New York in September. Will BM be there or is he going to stay in Nice for a long time? The writer will be back at the beginning of October.
