ContentBM replies to Dilia's letter of 28 December 1956. He has not yet seen the contract that Dilia wants to enter into with Boosey & Hawkes so does not know how to advise. He has not heard from B&H for a long time. He advises Dilia not to expect much from B&H - the publishing house seems to produce little material, protects British composers (such as Britten) and works for profit.
BM asks Dilia to send the contract or the most important points from it. B&H will probably be more interested in symphonic works than operas, concentrating on one work and protecting the music market for its published works. So there is no need to rush into material for which there is no immediate demand (such as THE VOICE OF THE WOODS or THEATRE BEHIND THE GATE). Even THE SPALIER as a full-length ballet will be difficult to place. BM would be interested to know how the contract affects his relationship to the exclusive contract with B&H and potential new contracts with Dilia. For example, PLAYS OF MARY is his property. Orbis' right to BM's works is questionable: their contract expired while BM was abroad.
BM has not renewed his contract with B&H for this year. Thus the publisher does not have exclusive rights to his other works.
