ContentMelantrich's decision to publish TRE RICERCARI comes too late; Martinů had already promised the work to UE London. Melantrich had plenty of time to decide. Moreover, on 1 January 1939 Martinů's mutual contract with Melantrich ended, and Martinů was forced to give his works elsewhere. Martinů requested that the manuscript score be sent immediately to UE London.
Why did they have the material acquired if they wanted to publish the work?
Martinů points out that he easily commissioned his other works from other publishers. This applies to the CONCERTA GROSSO, the INVENTIONS and the scenic stuff. Melantrich had 1 1/2 years of the work available and did not take advantage of it.
