Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů saved everything he had [?]. He thanks Paul Sacher, especially for Mozart [BM asked for shorter pieces for orchestra, see Sac 1958-04-09].
BM sends Sacher the score and piano excerpt for MIRANDOLINA. BM wants to offer the opera to the Basel []Basler Stadttheater] as a world premiere and would be happy for PS to take on the performance. The work had been sitting for a very long time at Boosey & Hawkes, where they did nothing with it, and so BM took it back. Erich Leinsdorf was delighted with the score. His only criticisms were that the sopranos were still set too low and that the Italian text did not work well with the accents. BM acknowledges both. The soprano is more in a mezzo-soprano position, but this can easily be adjusted. BM mainly wanted the text to be understood. Would soprano or mezzo-soprano be better? Ernst Roth objected that the piece is difficult and performance would require many rehearsals. He is right, the orchestra is rather Mozartean and that is always challenging, but it can't be helped. BM would have been happy for PS to mention the piece in the theatre, and even happier if he had taken on the performance himself. He asks Sacher to take a look at the score and write his opinion of it.
BM and ChM are about to leave and BM is determined to do nothing in Nice until September. In Nice he picks up the GREEK PASSIONS. Alfred Schlee still visited him and had grand plans for the work, but it must first of all be finished.
BM wrote the DUO [FOR HOUSEL AND VIOLONCELLO No. 2] and Ernst Mohr asked him to keep the music with Maja Sacher. BM also made the list that PS asked him to make.
BM and ChM wish the Sachers a pleasant rest of the holidays. They regret that they cannot wait for the Sachers. BM gives his addresses to La Baule and to Nice (as of 1 Sep 1958).
