Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů thanks Paul Sacher for his letter of 30 December 1946. He and [Charlotte Martinů] are thinking of PS and regret that they will not be able to attend the concert [premiere of TOCCATA E DUE CANZONI, 21 January 1947].
BM is recovering very slowly and it will probably take a few more months.
BM comments on the letter PS received from Miloš Šafránek. In it [MS asked Sacher if he would entrust the piano part of SINFONIETTA GIOCOSA to his wife Germaine Leroux, see Sac 1946-12-30. BM here mistakenly refers the request to the forthcoming Prague concert and PS later clarifies the misunderstanding, see Sac 1947-01-13]. BM persuades Sacher not to attach much importance to the request. GL is a good pianist, but BM would have preferred if MS had asked him first. Besides, GL is due to play the piece in Prague in March with the Czech Philharmonic, so there is no need to perform it again in April. Above all, BM does not wish to have DVOJKONCERT combined with another of his works, especially not with SINFONIETTA GIOCOSA. BM is already happy that PS will conduct the Prague premiere of DVOJKONCERT.
BM looks forward to hearing news of the annual concert [of the Basel Chamber Orchestra, 21 Jan 1947].
Charles Munch is now in New York and will perform Arthur Honegger's work. BM looks forward to. Honegger's Symphony [No. 2] was very well received at the Prague Spring Festival.
BM and ChM greet the addressee and Maja Sacher and invite them to the USA.
