Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav [and Charlotta] Martinů thank Paul [and Maje] Sacher for their letters and for their willingness to send something to the BM family as soon as possible.
BM gladly accepts Sacher's commission for a piece for small string orchestra [TOCCATA E DUE CANZONI].
BM has not yet completed his "symphonic period"; he has yet to write his Symphony No. 5 [SYMPHONY No. 5]. He wants to dedicate it to the Red Cross.
BM asks Sacher for advice: everyone around him discourages them from returning to Europe and advises them to postpone the trip; the news from Europe is bad and contradictory. BM would have nothing to do in Prague until the autumn of the following year, and would only go to Paris to perform the DVOJKONCERT under the baton of PS. From this he concludes that it would be better to stay in America, continue his work and postpone his departure for 3 to 4 months. BM asks Sacher to keep him reliably informed about the situation in Europe, especially for the sake of ChM, who would prefer to leave immediately.
He and ChM are happy to stay with Sacher for a few days, hopefully during the holidays.
BM sent Sacher his biography [by Milos Safranek?, published by Alfred A. Knopf, see Sac 1945-09-16].
