Content and physical description
ContentPaul Sacher informs Bohuslav Martinů that he received his letter a few days ago.
PS has instructed the bank to pay the composer $250 for the violin concerto [CONCERTO DA CAMERA]. He hopes that the payment went well, even though the letter was sent to the composer's previous address in New York.
PS thanks the addressee for his comments on the score. He will take them up as soon as he is free.
In any case, it will be better to mark the regular mensuration, even if the melody cannot be squeezed into it. BM is therefore to leave the passages in question as he has written them: it is the performer's task to present the sense of melody and rhythm.
PS repeats words of admiration and thanks. He hopes that Boosey & Hawkes will publish the work.
BM is no longer in Edgartown, apparently now living on Long Island.
PS regrets that BM will not be attending the premiere of CONCERTA DA CAMERA. PS will perform a DOUBLE CONCERT in Zurich in May.
PS has been in regular correspondence with Marcel Mihalovici lately. According to reports from him, Irène Codreano and Tibor Harsányi are doing quite well. PS gives Mihalovici's address in Cannes.
MM has composed a long sonata for violin and piano to mark the addressee's 50th birthday. Fritz Hirt and Monique Haas will perform it in Basel on 27 October.
PS is glad that BM has news from his relatives and from his mother-in-law Amicia Quennehen.
PS and Maja Sacher send their greetings to BM and Charlotte Martinů.
