Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů received letters from Paul Sacher dated 29 January and 4 February almost simultaneously, as well as the score of [TWO CONCERTS]. He was happy to write Sacher the concerto that PS had asked him to write [see Sac 1941-02-04, CONCERTO DA CAMERA]. He won't be able to write the piece in Lisbon, there is not enough time and no suitable environment. He promises to get to work as soon as possible in America. He remembers Gertrud Flügel very well. He hopes to find a way to send the piece from America. A copy must be made in case the manuscript is lost.
BM asks that PS be allowed to perform the work in America after the premiere. He estimates that PS could receive the piece in June. BM is grateful to Sacher for his help and for the promised premiere. He agrees with PS's requests for the form of the work. He will keep him informed about his work and other matters.
BM [and Charlotte Martin] were unable to sail early, but thanks to Sacher they are among the lucky ones who got seats on the ship at all.
Life in Lisbon is not very pleasant, BM is already looking forward to America. He] met several Americans [in Lisbon], and if their national mentality was typical, life in America would probably be pleasant, lively and natural. Now BM is in an environment of anxiety, unease and despair. Otherwise, life in Lisbon is monotonous. Many of the promises BM was given have not been fulfilled, and musical life there is confined to the radio.
BM had no desire to write; he will devote himself to correspondence now before he leaves. He will write directly to Universal Edition [regarding CONCERTA GROSSA].
Asks Sacher to send a ticket to the Vieux Moulin for Amicia Quennehen, ChM's mother.
He sends his regards to the addressee and to Maja Sacher.
