Content and physical description
ContentThe letter and the score of the CONCERTO GROSSO have arrived. This piece represents a great problem; the writer likes the score, yet the combination of instruments is so unusual that there will be few possibilities for its execution He hoped for a more practical piece. He prompts the addressee to employ a more usual configuration, perhaps a suite based on Czech folklore; something that could be applied everywhere, and on a larger scale, something for a wide audience. Therefore, he cannot support the publication of the piece. When it comes to the CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN AND ORCH. NO. 1, he will write forthwith to Samuel Dushkin; the concerto is good and there is no reason to begin writing another one, given that the first one has yet to be premiered. Sender is looking forvard to hearing the news about the opera [premiere of JULIETTE taking place that day in Prague 16.3.1938].
