| Content | Bohuslav Martinů finally received a letter from Karel Šebánek, in which KS reproaches him for BM's late replies to his letters. BM does not understand, he answers all letters immediately. KS should not keep apologising, BM understands that he probably cannot do much. He doesn't know if OSA really sent the siblings the money they promised, because they haven't heard anything from home. BM doubts if it was a good idea and if he didn't make the siblings rather worried about it. BM would have preferred that they had paid the requested amount from Orbis as he can recover the money from OSA if he becomes a member of "another company". He does not expect money from Orbis. He wonders who is in place of Antonín Čejka, about whom nothing is known. He asks the CS for details, including names and addresses, and which ministry to contact regarding the request to borrow JULIETTE material. KS does not need to ask the Director of the National Theatre Ladislav Bohac, BM knows his opinion. LB has no objection to the loan of Juliette material as the National Theatre has no plans to perform the work at this time. This information was also confirmed by Jindřich Honzl. LB just needs permission for the shipment. BM received a letter from the Embassy in Washington that they have asked the Ministry of Information and the State Department to send the material. BM thinks that JULIETTE will be omitted again in the US for one or two years, as they probably chose Jenufa to perform. BM cannot do anything until he has the Juliette material. JH has promised to help. Orbis can make a profit on the performance for operating rights. BM doesn't know what to do with Spike, he seems confused. Definitely need to add more detailed lyrics and plot descriptions to the extract. BM would welcome sending material to HER ABOUT MARIA if it goes well with Juliette. BM thought the contract with Boosey & Hawkes was signed, he is disappointed that this is not the case. Advises KS to look into London and arrange everything there directly with Ernst Roth. There will be changes after Ralph Hawkes' death. BM is wondering who might be sent where. There is no prospect of KS coming to America. He could justify a trip to London by meeting BM, arranging the fees for performing Juliette there, bringing BM money and the score of the Plays of Mary to show. There is a great deal of interest in BM's music there, as well as in Norway and Sweden. The play on the bridge was a success in Canada and Rome. In America it will be performed at the Mannes School twice this summer. He has had letters from home about Charlotte's illness. He will see what can be done, the French administration is terrible and tedious. He asks for more copies of Juliette (new translation will be ready soon) and FIELD MASS to be sent, there is a demand for them. KS sent a package through Darex. He did not send the cigarettes, Alain Divis wrote that he got the home ones. He asked for AD, he hasn't heard from him for a long time. |
