| Content | Bohuslav Martinů wrote that he had been travelling in Italy and was now back in Nice, where he was continuing his work on the opera. Marie Martinů copied sentences from BM's letter which MM thinks will interest Karel Šebánek:
BM received a letter from Munich, they would like to perform PLAYS ABOUT MARIA. It is still dragging on in [Prague?], but the opera department has already agreed that another arrangement must be found. They have written to the State Publishing House, they still don't want to allow it, they said they have been thinking about it for a long time, and now the Minister has issued an order to release BM's works for performance. They act as if they have forgotten BM's letter, where he says he takes all things back and writes how much he respects BM, which BM also believes, after meeting V[itezslav] Nezval. He asks what KS said when he visited the Martinů family and KS also says he has not yet written. As for BM's visit home, friends advise him not to go - [Rudolf] Firkušný probably refused and will not go, and BM's publisher is definitely against BM going + many other friends. He would probably get a permit without any problems, but there could be trouble when he returns to New York, they are very careful about that there. Back home he is still considered a member of the Republic and not a US citizen, that's the law.
MM thinks KS will know more about who is stalling and complicating the whole thing again. They also don't play anything [from BM] anywhere, which is odd because even the radio had a few things recorded. They did, however, listen to SINFONIETTU LA JOLLA, a more recent, and perhaps very frequently played song. He tries to be sensible about visiting BM at home, so as not to offend BM. |
