Content and physical description
ContentJan Novák thanks Karel Šebánek for his letters. He had hoped to be able to satisfy him, but he has neither the score [CONCERTINA for piano and orchestra] yet, because the copyist was in surgery, nor a photograph [presumably of the score of the same work], because Soukal [?] is taking time. If KS has nothing against it, he will send one photograph directly to Polička. He will send the score as soon as possible. [Jan Novák made an arrangement of this piece for two pianos for the CHF, which the CHF published in 1956 together with the original version of the piece.] The CONCERTINO is lovely and charming music and it would be a shame to let it lie. In the meantime, before JN sends the score, KS can have the piece played at Czechoslovak Radio, where they have a recording with [Břetislav] Bakala and Eliska Nováková at the piano. JN doesn't know why [Jiří] Berkovec doesn't let it out on the radio. Eliška Nováková is now practising a new Martinů [apparently SONATA FOR PIANO]. KS's news of the contract with London [perhaps with Boosey & Hawkes?] has raised hopes among the composers of the Brno Composers' Union (JN encloses their letters). BM promised to send Jan Novák a CONCERT FOR TWO PIANOES, but what good is that if he can't get the material. Does the contract also apply to Associated Music Publishers? JN would like to play the CONCERT FOR TWO CLAVES with EN and perhaps also with [Karl] Ančerl. [...] JN has read the New York reviews of SYMPHONIC FANTASIES - those guys are really scared of it, but the reviews shouldn't reach Czech readers or BM might be banned again.
