| Content | Bohuslav Martinů answers Jan Novák's letter, He would also like to cut off the legs of the piano, but he has a Pleyel at his disposal, which Clara Schuman played, and so he cannot afford it. JN is to greet [Břetislav] Bakala, whom BM often remembers with [Frank] Rybka. BM is struggling with the opera [GREEK PASSION]. They are cold. BM does not know if he is in disgrace for not coming to Czechoslovakia. He has received Janáček's book on folk song and recommends it to JN for study. If JN had got to Salzburg, it would have been a "Hi", but he has a lot of competition (see letter to [Zdeněk] Zouhar [presumably letter to Zou 1956-06-25]). The idea that Eliska [Nováková] should go to Rome is excellent. She would benefit from staying outside and would be taken in [at the American Academy] in Rome, but she doubts that they will allow her to take money out. The mood is better now, and so JN might go out too? As for Paris, BM is not there, so it would be of no use to [Karl] Šebánek. It's suspicious about the Záviš [JN song], JN will have to cut it and it won't make it more popular anyway. The vineyard idea is a "first A" idea, BM hopes to profit from it. Both of them [along with Charlotte Martino] is hello. |
