ContentA draft of a proposal by Jindřich Říha [KPR 1932-01-27], in which the writer discusses the financial situation of Bohuslav Martinů and the provision of support for his further work in Paris, where the composer is a member of the École de Paris and promotes modern Czech music. BM turned down a position at the Brno Conservatoire about three years ago because he is not a professor and did not want to leave Paris, but he did not know that the economic crisis would occur and his financial situation would deteriorate significantly. In America, his income from his works dropped to almost zero. He is dependent on the salary of his wife, who works in a waterproof coat factory, and now earns only 80 francs a week, compared with the previous salary of 500 francs a month. BM promises to improve his situation after finishing an opera for the National Theatre. He has to write a new opera, as the National Theatre does not want to perform his other operas because they are too French and not suitable for Prague, he says.
