Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů fears that in March they will no longer perform JULIET [at the Wiesbaden theatre]. They changed the whole programme and performed the opera in February without notifying him. Georges Neveux will thus never know what nightmare he unwittingly wrote. BM regrets that he will not see the GN performance. He was going to see it again himself in Wiesbaden, among other things to meet GN there.
What about Neveux's friends in important positions in the theatres? Is there a chance that JULIETTA will be performed in Paris? A transfer of the Wiesbaden company is probably not possible, but a performance at the Opéra Comique would be welcome. BM would possibly take care of the French text.
The Wiesbaden critics wrote that the production may not have been up to BM and GN's expectations. Nevertheless, it was impressive. However, BM and GN have already exhausted the small Wiesbaden audience, so the show is probably over. BM will look elsewhere.
The Tantems are still at the [Bärenreiter] publishing house in Kassel, awaiting confirmation from Prague, and progress is slow. BM has set the GN share at 1.5%. This is about a fifth of BM's share, out of which the translation and the publisher must also be paid. It is a little more than the GN demanded for ARIADNA ["Thesee"].
Nobody got the Ricordi prize. BM will now try to place ARIADNA [?]. He likes it, the lyrics more than the music.
BM has long planned to write vaudeville and has now chosen Eugène Labiche's comedy "Le plus hereux de trois". It would be a hilarious show, but the subject needs to be adapted. Wouldn't the GN be tempted? BM could turn it into a nice comedy with music in the manner of an old songbook.
They are going [with Charlotte Martinů] to Nice for April and May. Isn't the GN going to the Côte d'Azur? It would be great if they could talk about the EL play. BM writes an address to Nice. If they don't meet there, GN is to inform the composer of the possibilities of a Paris performance of JULIETTA and of his attitude to the EL play.
BM and ChM greet GN and his wife.
