Content and physical description
ContentAntonín Čubr from the music department of Dilia writes to the theatre department. He encloses a letter from Eleuthère Lovreglia, sent on 25 September 1970 from Nice, which was received on 23 October 1970.
On 27.11.1967 the theatre department supplied the music department with one copy each of the Czech and French versions of the 'Record' [of Dilia's proceedings, see DLA 1967-06-14] of 14.6.1967. According to it, Charlotta Martinů and Dilia agreed to use the French translation by Bohuslav Martinů. ChM has it in a piano extract which is complete except for 30 pages. EL and Anna Marie Wurm will provide the translation of the rest. According to the "Record", Dilia is to pay 3,000 CZK for the translation, payable equally in non-transferable CZK. Upon completion of the work, the translators will be entitled to a 1% royalty on Dilia's share, divisible equally and payable in French. ChM's share is 6% of Dilie's share.
ChM was to discuss the agreement with both translators and with the Paris office of Boosey & Hawkes. It was to arrange for a piano extract with the edited French translation and a separate typed translation to be delivered to Dilia by the end of 1967.
At a meeting on 19 January 1968, the then head of the music department [AC] received from the head of the theatre department [Zdeněk Pechold] a letter from ChM dated 2 January 1968, an undated letter from EL (received 9 January 1968) and a fragment of a letter from Anna Maria Wurm to ChM telling how she and EL had split the fee. The original letters were returned to the theatre department on 25 January 1968.
The music department worked in 1968 and 1969 on setting the piano lifts of JULIETTA for the forthcoming performance at Angers on 26 March 1970 [Grand Théâtre; apparently 25 March, see DLA 1970-11-16]. Critical response was positive, but the opera failed to arouse interest among the public, and perhaps there were not even three reprises. The Paris B&H music department has not yet sent the programmes and photographs of the 7/7/1970 performance they requested. They are sending him a reminder.
The music department lacks the original letters from ChM, AMW and EL, as well as copies of letters documenting the theatre department's discussion of JULIETTA. From 1968-1970 they only have correspondence relating to the material.
