Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů replies to Vojtěch Strnad of Dilia to his letters of 11 and 13 December 1958. BM explains the request received by Dilia from Boosey & Hawkes [to send the manuscript score of JULIETTA to the New York branch of B&H] as a misunderstanding: B&H had in mind only the piano excerpt with the English text by Walter Schmolka. BM had already given this message to Dilia after Charlotte Martinů. Dilia had earlier confirmed to the composer that she had the piano lift in her possession, it had come to her from the theatre in Wiesbaden or from B&H in Bonn.
Dilia may also have a translation by Jiri Mucha [meaning Geraldine Much's translation?] which is not sung; BM got that from Karel Šebánek. Schmolk's text was either paid for by BM himself or they had a royalty arrangement. According to Dilia, the English singing text is directly in the manuscript: BM does not know whether it was there from the beginning (it would have been Mucha's [Muchová?] translation then); it may have been added only in Wiesbaden. BM asks whether Dilia has a contract with B&H for a performance in English.
Dilia apparently did not receive a reply from BM to her letter of 4 October 1958. In it BM refuted the report on the performance of the GREEK PASSIONS in Zurich: the work is not finished and BM's operations will delay its completion even further. The work belongs to the Vienna Universal Edition, which will decide on the premiere.
BM has decided on the final title of the opera MIRANDOLINA. It is in negotiations with Karl Vötterl for its publication. The Bern-based publisher is in contact with Alkor-Edition, which is considering performing the opera in Prague and will publish other BM works. BM originally wanted to entrust MIRANDOLINA to Dilia, but he had concerns. He will keep Dilia informed of his discussions with KV.
