Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů is glad to hear from Paul [and Maja] Sacher from Schönenberg and hopes that they will rest after their trip from the USA.
He answers the questions [contained in the enclosed letter of 25 November].
FIELD MESSES:
BM clarifies and explains the title. They have the material in Melantrich, and will certainly send it to Sacher. There are problems with the translation, there is only an English translation and it is unsatisfactory. BM and his Princeton students have translated the text anew, so the only good translation is now at Princeton University. If PS wants to do the work, BM can send him one part with a good translation and PS would then add the text to the remaining material that would come from Prague. The choir is not large, so it would not be too laborious. Another possibility would be a translation into German. Does the PS know anyone who could produce it? They are too slow in Prague and still don't have time.
BM thinks the mass is written for three percussionists but he doesn't have the score with him to check. The piece lasts approximately 30 minutes. BM would like to replace the harmonium with an organ. They also used the organ in the Princeton church performance and it was impressive.
CONCERTANTE SYMPHONY NO. 2:
The piece lasts about 16 minutes. The "French horn" is a French horn. Horns and clarinets are optional; the piece can also be played with just strings and piano. There is an error in the score, pages 55 and 56 have been switched. BM is glad that Sacher likes the piece and wants to perform it for his 60th birthday.
BM does not know the composer Miroslav Kubíček.
BM and Charlotte Martinů salute the addressee and MS.
