Content and physical description
ContentPaul Sacher thanks Bohuslav Martinů for his letter. He is glad that BM accepted his commission [TOCCATA E DUE CANZONI].
On 21 January 1947 BKO will celebrate 20 years since its first performance and PS would like to premiere this new composition by the addressee at the anniversary concert. He hopes to have a piece by Arthur Honegger to mark the occasion, and may also ask Paul Hindemith or Igor Stravinsky. BM may add other instruments to the string orchestra line-up.
PS regrets that BM will not be attending the Paris premiere of TWO CONCERTS. However, BM's reasoning in his previous letter [BM was considering postponing his trip to Europe, see Sac 1945-11-26] is correct. The situation differs from one European country to another; in Switzerland life is almost as it was before the war, but in France conditions are more difficult. There are difficulties with supplies and heating and everything is expensive. The PS urges the addressee to stay in America until return is necessary. Hopes BM and Charlotte Martin will be able to come to him [and Maya Sacher] for a few weeks in the summer.
PS acknowledges receipt of composer's biography [by Milos Safranek?, published by Alfred A. Knopf, see Sac 1945-09-16].
