Content and physical description
ContentBohuslav Martinů acknowledges to Paul and Maje Sacher the receipt of the letter of October 9.
It is a pity that BM [and Charlotta Martinů] cannot be at the [CONCERTA DA CAMERA] premiere and meet the addressees in Schoenberg.
In America, this piece has caught the attention of many violinists, such as Louis Krasner and Ruth Posselt. The American premiere will probably be given in March by Bronislaw Huberman, who requested the score himself and was enthusiastic about it.
Boosey & Hawkes were also impressed; BM are confident that they will publish the piece.
BM agrees with the addressee's note on the mensuration and clarifies his position. The initial rhythm of 1-6-5-6-5-7 would be difficult for players if played bar by bar, but is easy when a four-bar phrase is seen as the basis.
The PS is to comment on the difficulty of the solo part and make corrections if necessary.
BM and ChM have traded the Edgartown countryside for the Jamaica [New York] countryside, where they have peace of mind.
Nearly completed the CONCERTANT SUITE FOR HOUSEL AND ORCHESTRA, written for Samuel Dushkin. He wants to write a cello sonata [SONATA No. 2] (SONATA No. 1 for cello was left in Paris and BM would need to have it with him), an orchestral mass for Czech soldiers and probably a Czech ballet. It has to replace the works left in Paris.
BM thinks he would have a chance in America if he had the manuscripts with him. He could place his folk ballet [ŠPALÍČEK?], for example, because there is interest in this genre in the USA.
He is glad for the DVOJKONCERT [PS is to perform it in Zurich in May, see Sac 1941-10-09]. It has not yet been played in America, BM is still waiting for a suitable conductor.
BM is glad that PS is keeping in touch with Marcel Mihalovici. BM also received a long letter from MM and wrote to him himself.
BM offers to send small items to Sacher via his friends in Lisbon. Switzerland seems to allow this. BM addresses parcels to Karolina Martinů in this way.
BM and ChM greet the addressee and Maja Sacher.
