Content and physical description
ContentPaul Sacher is currently preparing the programme for the 1941/42 season and is missing a modern work for violin and orchestra. He would like to ask Bohuslav Martinů for such a work [the future CONCERTO DA CAMERA]. The piece should last 15-20 minutes. It should suit his first violinist, Gertrud Flügel, who is technically proficient and musical, focusing more on abrupt and energetic pieces. Does BM remember her?
The accompanying orchestra would have to be limited to strings with timpani and piano only, so the scoring would correspond to a DOUBLE CONCERT, but without dividing the orchestra into two groups.
PS thinks that it might be possible for BM to compose the piece in Lisbon and send it to Sacher before sailing to the USA. This is a regular commission.
PS also sends its regards to Charlotte Martinů.
