Content and physical description
ContentAlfred Schlee is leaving for a holiday in Mautendorf. He is taking with him the novel and the libretto of [THE GREEK PASSIONS] and will study them. He feels at the moment that the finale is too long and that a more effective ending would be immediately after the murder. Otherwise, he finds the shortening of the text successful and also appreciates Bohuslav Martinů's concentration on the main characters. In places, however, he still finds the libretto lengthy. He has received a letter from Herbert Karajan, suggesting a meeting in Salzburg around 20 August - a discussion with him about this opera might be useful. BM is to let HK and him [AS] know, he would come too. In the meantime, he will find out from HK whether BM is interested in the opera. If BM needs money, he can send him some.
