Content and physical description
Content- The writer thanks you for the cheque for 4000 fr.fr., the receipt of which he acknowledges;
- has received the addressees' letter of 20.12. - is very pleased that the addressees are satisfied with his work - also thinks it will sound good - but if there is anything inappropriate in the violin parts, let the addressees correct it themselves, as he has already asked them to do;
- as regards the passage in octaves - the writer is not sure which passage the addressees have in mind, as he is unable to tell from the sketches. He asks whether it is the passage they both have in the solo (quasi cadenza) before the repetition of the themat, or whether it is the passage in the tucopia in 6/8, which in the orchestra is in octaves doubled by flute and violas. This may seem somewhat empty with piano, but it is different with orchestra. Let the addressees copy the relevant bars in the solos and send it to him for correction ; (...) he thought it might sound good - but one is likely to make mistakes in the very things one is most sure of (...).
- Let the addressees still send the tempi of each part (...).
