Content and physical description
ContentMaja Sacherová promised Miloš Šafránek that she would write him some details about the last period of Bohuslav Martinů's life. Charlotta Martinů apparently told Šafránek all the details of the composer's illness, etc. BM remained until the last moment an inquisitive person who wanted to look into the essence of things. He read scientific treatises, books on social politics or religious issues, and philosophical works.
Paul Sacher would like to point out the mistakes that appeared in the first edition of Šafránek's book on BM, so that they will not be repeated in the version that the MC is now completing: 1) The musicians of the BKO did not protest when the DVOJKONCERT was to be played, nor did they refuse. On the contrary, at the very first rehearsal they realized that they had an exceptional work of art in front of them. 2) DVOJKONCERT was rehearsed exactly nine times and during the rehearsals the other works on the programme were also studied. 3) The concert took place on 9 February 1940 in the new concert hall of the Casino de Bâle in Basel.
MS wishes the addressee all the best for the New Year.

Transcription of part of a letter written to Bohuslav Martinů by his attending physician at the hospital in Liestal. This doctor had to leave a few days before BM's death. Translation [by Maja Sacher] from German into French. The doctor expresses the embarrassment into which the composer's modesty, greatness and attitude to his own illness led him. [MS did not complete the translation].
