Content and physical description
ContentHe thanks you for your very kind letter and is delighted with MH's plan to write a book about BM. He knew Bohuslav Martinů very well - they met during his stay in the USA. He was privileged that BM wrote a Sonata for him and also dedicated it to him. In any case, RS wanted to play it for the author before the premiere, so they met in Schönenberg. BM had only a few comments, which RS accepted. A preview of sorts took place a few days later in Düsseldorf, Germany, and soon afterwards the Sonata was performed in NY at Carnegie Hall. He adds his opinion of Martinů as a composer - he wrote masterfully for the piano, most of his works are challenging, but BM can express anything in them. As a person, BM was wonderfully gentle, kind and generous, and loved him as a true friend. He hopes that from this letter MH will have at least a rough idea of Serkin's relationship with BM.
