Content and physical description
ContentFrantišek Muzika writes to Bohuslav Martinů about the preparations for the performance of THE GAMES OF MARIA at the Brno theatre, where they have just begun to study the opera. FM met with [Antonín] Balatka. He was also supposed to meet the director [Branko] Gavell, but he left Brno. FM received the piano lifts of HER O MARIA from the National Theatre in Prague and learned that the opera would not be performed in Prague until the end of the season. FM liked the music of the opera very much. The affair with [Jindřich] Honzl is not lost yet [it is probably a matter of getting Honzl to direct the aforementioned production in Brno]. Time has been gained for negotiations, as the premiere is postponed from mid-December to January [the premiere took place on 23 February 1935]. BM is to arrange his stay in Czechoslovakia accordingly.
Scenically, PLAYS OF MARY will be very difficult, the most difficult FM has ever done. FM is troubled by the problem of stylistic unity of all the components, which are often very far apart. FM has given Balatka's address to BM, who will pass it on to [William] Ritter, who wants to send BM his libretto to set to music. FM sees little of Standa [Novak]. [Jiri] Herlod has died, this is the end of the Czech Quartet.
FM attributes greetings to Charlotte Martinů in French.
