Content and physical description
ContentEdward Davison, director of the School of General Studies, writes to Hunter College President George N. Shuster that after meeting with Douglas Moore, he is sending a proposal to Mr. [Francois] Jaroschy and Mrs. [Rose] Landver for three thirty-minute operas to be performed at the Opera Association workshop: the first is Alexander Tcherepnin's "The Farmer and the Fairy," the second is "WHAT MEN LIVE BY" by Bohuslav Martinů, who teaches composition at the Mannes School. This is a new work not previously performed based on a Tolstoy short story. It requires a baritone, two bass-baritones, a soprano, a mezzo-soprano, a narrator (tenor) and a four-part chorus. Simple cast. The libretto is in English. The third opera is "The Bad Boys in School" by Jan Meyrovitz.
F. Jaroschy consulted the selection with the Opera Association committee, which objected that the proposals lacked a work by a modern American composer, but FJ defended himself that he had not found a suitable work. The operas proposed by D. Moore were too large and unsuitable for performance at the Opera Association workshop. The committee members present agreed to state that they recommended the operas mentioned for performance. Mr. Brownlee would like to hear the operas performed with piano accompaniment if piano lifts are prepared within the next week. ED recommends convening the committee at the earliest possible date. In the meantime, the ED authorized Rose Landver and F. Jaroschy to begin practicing on the Martinů opera and to procure vocal scores so that they can assign roles to the singers.
