Content and physical description
ContentKarel Boleslav Jirák thanks Karel Šolc for his letter. He received a review of his performance of Mládí (Youth) from Hudební rozhledy, sent to him by František Smetana from Jamaica. The conductor [Karel] Šejna chose a tempo that was too slow, which he said did not benefit the piece. [Zdeněk] Máca[l] and [Silvestr] Hip[man] were not at the concert, only KŠ missed it. Gentlemen from the National Museum should get in touch themselves if they need anything from KBJ. Next the writer tells how he broke his toe. The first concert was a great success, now they are preparing a second one. KBJ can't get Dvorak's Symphony in G major on loan, it's expensive for the school to buy sheet music. He talks about the preparations for the concert, the planned programme and his students. He advises the addressee to move to America with his family - the housing situation is much better here, KBJ has a five-bedroom and could easily have a bigger one, plus there is no police housing report.
Rudolf Firkušný was in Chicago last week. He played Bohuslav Martinů's 2nd Concerto on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon (KBJ also conducted it with G[ermaine] Leroux). Here the performance had bad reviews as a piece "hopelessly out of date". Then on Saturday he played RF Beethoven. He is sad, his long-time love has died, but his sister from Prerov came to visit.
