ContentBohuslav Martinů writes to Vladimír Vaněk that there was only a short time before they would not see BM again. They had to return quickly from Nice to Basel, where they arrived on 4 November with X-rays of BM's intestines. For 14 days he was fed only on juices injected under his skin, for the next 14 days he ate only thick, disgusting soups, after which he lost 12 kg and is nothing like himself. Now he is back home and trying to put on weight, he is as weak as a fly and can't leave the house at all. He hopes that in another 14 days he will be able to go to Basel and start working again. Together with Charlotte Martinu, they send the Vaneks their wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Did VV read anything about the audition of the opera in Venice [the Ricordi prize, where Martinů also sent his opera ARIADNA]? What VV wrote about was something else.
