ContentErnst Roth finally had time to address the question of the English libretto of WHAT PEOPLE LIVE, after [Rufina] Ampenoff had compared the libretto with the original Russian story. The libretto is a literal translation of the Russian original, including the lines that David Adams has underlined, claiming that they come from the English translations by Black [meaning the collected edition of Tolstoy's work published by Walter J. Black in 1928] and [the couple] Maude. ER gives two examples. The English libretto occasionally contains minor changes due to dramatization. ER would not have considered the Maude translation, but it would be advisable to talk to the publisher regarding Black. If necessary, they could offer him a small share of the operating fees, around 10%, by which Bohuslav Martinů's share would be reduced.
